CWMCARN UNITED V BLAINA UNITED 13/09/08 After Noah moved his ark from the previous 40 day deluge, Cwmcarn finally got their season underway entertaining Blaina United in a league fixture. As usual the bullying Blaina pack shoved with all their might in the scrums using this power to grind their way up field. Cwmcarn defended stoutley and more than held their own at ruck and maul. Blaina took the lead with a nice break from ten freeing the outside backs to score. Carn replied with a penalty but Blaina broke away to score a second try. The half ended with Cwmcarn camped on Blaina's try line only to be denied by the ref failing to see a touch down and awarding a scrum instead. Carn started the second half well with Keiron Gilchrist barging over from close range after a powerful forward drive. Blaina replied with a score of their own followed by 2 penalties. A flurry of yellow cards saw Carn down to 13 and Blaina took full advantage scoring another try. Carn stayed in the game til the very end and credit must be given to both sides who played entertaining rugby throughout. Blaina turning out the winners 30 points to 8.
Coaches notes....
Despite being a few backs short Craig Brown and Mark Reader filled in
well in the centre and Shaun Gilchrist adapted well to life at 10. Simon
Hopkins & Martin reader showed what fine additions to the squad they
will be and Karl Baraby showed his commitment and effort in training has
paid off. More signings are required to bolster the back line and with
more fitness and practice we can develop further......a good effort boys
but more pain is required to progress!
CWMCARN UNITED V TONGWYNLAIS 27/09/08
The Carn entertained
Tongwynlais in a fast and open friendly with the visitors
capitalising on two early Carn mistakes to race into a 12-0 lead
.With a depleted back line Carns pack decided to take the game by
the scruff and they showed power and enterprise in the loose with
Neil"molby" Hopkins and Simon "the power" Hopkins really taking the
game to the opposition with some storming runs and strong defence
around the fringes. The pack drove aggresively to the line where
powerful scrum half Keiran Gilchrist barged over for a converted try
. This was quickly followed by a free flowing move featuring
forwards and backs with Miles "winko" Goodman touching down in the
corner. After a flurry of yellow cards saw Carn reduced to 13 ,
Tongwynlais took full advantage and crossed to lead 19-15. after the
break Carns half backs keiron and Shaun Gilchrist controlled the
game as the pack dogged on and on. Openside and lineout threat Karl
Baraby played his best game for the club and strong running from
Martyn Reader and Mike "black belt " Featherstone saw Carn go close
time and again before another handling error behind saw Tongwynlais
go further ahead with a converted try. A rousing finale saw Shaun
Gilchrist go over from a planned move from a scrum but this proved
in vain as the final whistle saw Carn go down 26-22.
ABERBEEG V CWMCARN UNITED
Cwmcarn travelled to face Aberbeeg in a league fixture with a much weakened pack. With only a makeshift front row it would have been easy to opt for uncontested scrums but THE CARN strive to maintain the spirit of rugby and despite facing the bigger beeger pack Carn saw out the game . Beeger played some superb all round rugby in poor conditions to lead 25-0 at the break. Carn had some good scoring opportunities but failed to convert any, notably when six stone winger Leighton Walkley was held up over the line. The second half was much closer with Carn making the most of what little ball they had to play some running rugby of their own. Returning centre Matthew Hughes crossed but Beeger were too strong and turned out comfortable 39-5 winners. Paul buckley played well at loosehead with some impressive work around the field and despite lack of preparation Sam Brewster was outstanding along with Simon Hopkins,Martyn Reader and Drew Hobbs who worked tirelessly on the backfoot throughout. CWMCARN UNITED RFC WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR OLD FRIENDS ABERBEEG RFC FOR A GAME THAT WAS PLAYED THROUGHOUT IN THE SPIRIT THAT IS RUGBY UNION. Cwmcarn United RFC V Old Tylerrian RFC

2008 Cwmcarn United RFC V Cwm RFC WORTHINGTON CUP Cwmcarn United RFC V Sully RFC Cwmcarn United RFC v Hafodyrdrynys
RFC 13th Dec 2008 Cwmcarn
entertained Hafodyrynys in a friendly at
the Welfare ground. The first half was a
stop start affair with the referee
intent on blowing the pea from his
whistle !!! Hafod had the lions share of
possession and scored two tries but
Shaun Gilchrist kept Carn in touch
striking the ball well to land two
penalties to make the half time score
12-6 to Hafod. The game up opened after
the break with Matthew Hughes prominent
in the centre before breaking through
two tackles to set up an excellent
length of the field converted try to
take the lead. Some more fine play saw
Jack Davies score under the posts for
another converted try. Back came Hafod
with a vengeance and some good handling
saw them go over in the corner and a
fine conversion saw the gap close to 1
point in Carns favour. From the restart
Carn gained field position and third
penalty by Gilchrist was just about
enough for Carn to hang on despite
intense pressure on their line for the
last five minutes the final score being
23-19. Cwm v Cwmcarn United RFC 20th Dec
2008 Cwmcarn
travelled to Cwm for a league fixture
and despite some sore heads from the
festivities the previous evening put up
an encouraging performance against a
strong Cwm 15. the pack were outstanding
in the loose especially Matthew Harper,
Stuart Mayne and Neil "Molby" Hopkins.
Although giving weight and ground at the
set piece Molby was seen to good effect
with ball in hand and at the break down
where as usual Carns team of vertically
challenged forwards made their presence
felt on the ground gaining some fine
turnovers and releasing quick ball.
However with a depleted back line and
impressive no 10 Shaun Gilchrist tearing
a cartilage in the first movement of the
match Carn could not make best use of
this ball whilst Cwms speedy
threequarters did .going into the final
10 mins the game was still in the
balance but eventually Cwm took
advantage of Carns disorganised back
line to triumph 30-0. This score
flattering the winners as it was not a
true reflection on the game. 17 January 2009 After weeks of inactivity
Cwmcarn travelled to a wet and
windy Trefil in the 1/4 finalof
the Cyrus Davies Cup. The first
half saw Carn with the benefit
of the gale force wind but a
mistake cost a try in the
Corner. Carn battled fiercely
against the far bigger Trefil 8
in the loose and were unlucky
not to score when Mike
Featherstone, Molby Hopkins and
captain Richie Partridge all
went close. Trefil played well
into the gale and eventually got
into Carns 22 where they drove
over from a line out to leave
the half time score 10-0. Trefil
used the elements well in the
second half and scored early to
lead 17-0 before Carn dug in and
defended manfully until a spate
of injuries couples with fatigue
allowed Trefil to draw clear in
the final 1/4 to run out 44-0
victors. Credit must be given to
all 22 players who gave their
all against superior opposition
and performances like this will
ensure many more league wins in
the second half of the season. 24th January 2009 Carn played host to Aberbeeg
in a league encounter and were
trounced 31-7. in fairness Carn
were lucky to get 7 as the
performance attitude and fitness
shown fell well short of
expected levels. After competing
well for an hour against a far
superior team last week the
coaching and managment staff
expected a return to winning
ways with a stronger side than
last week.this did not
materialise as the lacklustre
eight failed to deliver any ball
of note to the threequarters.
When they did have ball in hand
lack of support from the back
row saw moves fail and beegers
pack turnover the ball time and
time again. There is no doubt
the attitude to training has
taken effect as fitness levels
have dropped off alarmingly. Not
one of the starting 15 could
hold their head high after this
appalling display. Hollybush RFC v Cwmcarn United
RFC 31st January 2009 Cwmcarn United v Cwm 28th Feb 2009 Cwmcarn entertained Cwm at the
welfare ground. Carn as usual were
the much smaller side and were
missing outstanding prop Neil Molby
Hopkins .however as usual Carn were
like rats whenever play broke down
and turned ball over at will. Drew
Hobbs back in a more familiar role
at openside was outstanding until he
ran out of steam but was
overshadowed by Owen Bush Matthews
on his return from a two year injury
absence who was omnipresent. Cwm
took the lead just prior to the
break with a try and penalty but
Carn levelled with a fantastic solo
try by debutant Dan Rees who
mesmerised at least five defenders
whilst scoring from 40metres. after
the break the heavier Cwm pack kept
it tight and deprived Carn of the
ball. This meant they crept ahead
with two tries before Carn scored
another fine try with Shaun
Gilchrist putting in a delightful
chip for Rhys Davies to score. Carn
were not helped by the stop start
game the bulky Cwm forwards played
as they were not allowed to play in
their accustomed expansive style.
Cwm ran out 25-10 winners. It was
pleasing that carn had 25 players
reporting at the ground for
selection and with these youngsters
the future of the club is looking
rosy. Training as usual is at 18.30
on Wednesdays. Old Tylarians v Cwmcarn United
RFC 7th March 2009
Cwmcarn travelled to Old Tyllerians
with a full strength side for the
second successive week. Twenty five
players traveled causing headaches
in selection in all the right
area's. However despite playing good
expansive rugby in the first half
Carn reached the break just 9-8
ahead. This proved very costly as
after the re start OT's took a firm
grip of the game up front with their
young athletic back five running
amok in the loose. Carn ,usually
strong in this regard, were taken to
the cleaners by the more aggressive
OT eight. This presented a continual
stream of quick ball and despite
resolute defence the OT's ran out
deserved 22-9 victors. Cwmcarn v New Panteg 14th March
2009 Cwmcarn United v Old Tylarians 2 Sept 2007 Cwmcarn United started their league season with a hard fought 17-13 points win over Old Tylerians at the welfare ground. This is a promising start for the forthcoming season as Cwmcarn had already beat West Mon Old Boys in a trial match. Saturdays win was remarkable as only 5 recognised forwards were on the field. Special mention must go to Gary Isgrove, Paul James and Craig Brown for their sterling work upfront. Cwmcarn scored three lovely well worked tries to lead 17-6 but Old Tylerians and their heavy pack dominated after the break. Cwmcarns' defense worked tirelessly to keep the opposition out but finally with 6 minutes to go Old Tylerians got over the line. In a frantic last few minutes Cwmcarn held firm for the win. Man of the match performance by Richy Partridge. Cwmcarn are always looking for new players and train Monday and Wednesday at the welfare ground, old and new players welcome. Report by Carl Hughes
Tredegar Ironsides II v Cwmcarn United 9th Sept 2007
Cwmcarn continued their fine
start to the season, with their 20-12 points away victory at Tredegar
Ironsides 2nds. Cwmcarn scored 3 nice tries, the second of which was as
beautiful as Maria Sharapova! All the threequarters handled sublimely to
execute a pre-planned move with centre Luke Davies going in under the
posts. Other try scorers were Anthony Day and Gareth (Sid) Slocombe.
Choosing a man of the match was difficult with Luke Davies and Richard
Partridge to the fore, but the star performer with an immaculate performance
was Sid Slocombe.
This was all the more
deserving as Sid played the entire game with a broken nose which is to be
reset on Monday.
Report by Carl Hughes Cwmcarn United v Forgeside 6th October 2007 Cwmcarn United played Blaenavon Forgeside at the Welfare ground and despite playing very well went down 7--5 in a hard fought contest. Cwmcarns' smaller pack were up against it in the set piece but were like terriers in the loose providing a steady stream of quick ball for the backs in an entertaining game. There were some huge hits by both sides with Forgesides' inside centre and Brett Jenkins from Cwmcarn providing the heaviest of them on several bone crunching occasions. Forgeside led 7-0 at the break after a well worked try but Cwmcarn came back very hard and dominated the second half. Pacey winger Steve Rodriguez scored a fine debut try and all the backs played with fervor but chances were spurned, kicks were missed and Forgeside managed to hold on. Special mention to Sean Gilchrist and an improved performance from Ieaun Parsons after 18months injury absence but the man of the match performance was by Brett Jenkins for his breathtaking tackling and all round performance. Carl Hughes Newbridge United v Cwmcarn United 13th October 2007 Carl Hughes Hollybush v Cwmcarn United 20th October 2007 Cwmcarn lost their
100% league record in a fierce encounter with a huge Hollybush side.
Cwmcarn got off to their usual sluggish start and were punished as
Hollybush took advantage to race into a 10--0 lead within ten minutes of
kick off. Cwmcarns smaller but quicker pack were being out muscled in
the set piece and at the breakdown and only some siege gun like touch
finders by Ieuan Parsons kept Hollybush from increasing their lead. The
first half was marred however by a serious injury to scrum half Stuart
Smith who unluckily broke his leg and ankle in his comeback game after a
rib injury. This is the second incident in as many weeks with loose
forward Carl Baraby also out for a few months after an ankle injury
sustained last week against Newbridge Utd. Cwmcarn played much better
after the break as Hollybush's big eight tired and half time substitutes
Gary Isgrove, "Jammy" Jones and Sid Slocombe added more aggression to
the Cwmcarn side. Despite long periods of pressure Cwmcarn could not
breach the hard tackling defense and went down 10-0. Cwmcarn United v Forgeside Worthington Cup match 27th October 2007 Cwmcarn entertained
Bleanavon Forgeside in a Brewers Cup fixture at the Welfare ground. The
match had everything with yellow cards, missed kicks , fisticuffs and
plenty of exciting rugby. Bleanavon took the lead just before the break
after a strong forward drive. Cwmcarn had defended stoutly throughout
the first half but created little, this changed in the second half with
Cwmcarn dominating for long periods. This time the Forgeside defense was
superb but eventually after another period of intense pressure Sid
Slocombe put Lee Goodall over for a well worked try in the corner. The
score was locked at 5-5 and extra time beckoned. Cwmcarn were given two
kickable penalties to win the game but both were missed and the chance
of glory was gone. Into extra time and both sides again attacked each
other with gusto, Bleanavon got into Cwmcarns' 22 and were awarded a
penalty which was duly dispatched. Cwmcarn dominated the remainder of
extra time and in the dying seconds ran the length of the field only to
be stopped short in the corner. The ball was recycled quickly and spun
wide to the opposite side of the field where Tom Harris went over in the
corner only for the referee to adjudge, correctly, that he had touched
the corner flag whilst grounding the ball. Oh so close but Forgeside
took the spoils. Uniteds' injury jinx struck again with Ecuadorian prop
Carlos Valasco suffering a serious ankle injury, The third such blow in
successive weeks. Usk II v Cwmcarn Utd 3rd Nov 2007 Cwmcarn United
traveled to play Usk 2nd's in a friendly after three bruising league and
cup encounters had taken their toll with several players missing through
injury . The game was played in an entertaining fashion with both sides
prepared to use the ball from all over the field. Usk started well and
only a try saving tackle from novice winger Rhys Williams prevented them
from taking a deserved lead. The game ebbed and flowed before Cwmcarn
scored after many phases with veteran second row Lyndon Grosvenor
Griffiths getting the touch down to lead 5-0 at the break. Usk again
started the better and camped in Cwmcarns 22 for 5 minutes before
scoring a converted try to take the lead. This stirred Cwmcarns' terrier
like pack and good clean possession led to two tries being scored in
quick succession by scrum half Matthew Plews and centre Dai Matthias.
Plews and outside half Ieaun Parsons were now controlling the game very
well and after more concerted attacks flanker Craig Brown crashed over
for the final try with Ieun Parsons adding the extras, Cwmcarn finished
the game deserved winners 7-22 after a free flowing game. The whole 22
in the squad got some game time and the hard work during intensive
fitness sessions is starting to pay off with players noticeably fresher
at the end of recent games. Carl Hughes Old Tylerians v Cwmcarn United 10th Nov 2007 Report 1 Cwmcarn United took the short journey to Rose Heyworth Park to play
Old Tylerians in their second meeting of the season. The game was played
at a brisk pace by Cwmcarn hoping to make an entertaining spectacle for
the watching crowd but Old Tylerians stuck to their game plan of stick
it up the jumper Rugby which the referee seemed to prefer. The first points of the game was scored by Old Tylerians off a
dubious penalty in front of the posts. Cwmcarn struck back within
minutes with Shaun Gilchrist scoring a well deserved try from a well
placed down the field kick by flanker Richie Partridge. The rest of the
half was played in a similar ilk by both sides, with Cwmcarn trying to
play the more expansive entertaining game, with OT's and the match
official preference for the slower game. After half time the Cwmcarn crowd was to be disappointed even further
with penalty after penalty being awarded against United, some of which
beggared belief. One glimmer of hope came Uniteds' way when they were
allowed to play, with wing Mike Thomas scoring in spectacular fashion on
his return match for the club. Cwmcarn were now in the driving seat and
accelerating towards a deserved win only for the brakes to be slammed on
by Mr. Smith. OT's were awarded another penalty within 10mts. of the Cwmcarn line,
a quick penalty was taken and a try was scored. The score now at 8-10
Cwmcarn changed up gear in an attempt to ensure the victory with the
adoption of shock and awe tactics which resulted OT's Hooker being red
carded for a cynical punch from behind to Cwmcarns' No8. With minutes to
go coach Carl Hughes threw himself into the fray adding weight and
experience to the Cwmcarn pack. In their final attack OT's were again awarded a penalty in front of
the posts which they duly took. The final minutes of the game saw Carl
Hughes diving on a loose ball for a try, only to being disappointed by
Mr. Smith again, adjudging OT's had not thrown in straight at the
lineout, this was to expected as no advantage had been played throughout
the encounter. Cwmcarns' man of the match was awarded to Richie Partridge, but
special mention should go to Neil Hopkins (Molby) with his return to the
team after a debilitating viral infection, his sterling efforts up front
and around the field was much missed during his absence. The game ended with OT's the victor at 11-10, the loser being the
game of Rugby Union. Report 2 Cwmcarn United
returned to league action with an away trip to Old Tyllerians. Cwmcarn
started well with Sid Slocombe, immaculate at scrum half as usual , at
the heart of the attacks. Unfortunately Sid had to leave the field with
a head injury shortly before Cwmcarn took the lead after a breakaway
try by Shaun Gilchrist. After half time the heavier Tyllerian pack came
on strong but Cwmcarn dug in and a marvelous three quarter movement saw
wing Budgie Thomas swerve inside then outside his man with terrific pace
to score untouched in the corner. Again the conversion was missed and
this proved decisive as Tyllerians stormed back with a try and a
penalty. Cwmcarn entered a frantic last ten minutes playing into a gale
with a slender 10-8 lead. Every time they made some ground they were
penned back by some telling out of hand kicking by the Tyllerian
backline. In the final minutes Cwmcarns, hearts were broken as a penalty
was kicked to leave the final score line 11-10 in favor of Tyllerians.
The game was marred by the deserved sending off of the Tyllerian hooker
for a cowardly punch to the head from behind to Carns' dangerous lock
Dean "BASH 'EM UP" Johnson. Fortunately the referee ,who had a poor game
for both sides, made the right decision to brandish the red card. Cwmcarn United v Tredegar Ironsides 17th November 2007 A depleted Cwmcarn
side entertained Tredegar Ironsides seconds at the welfare ground. Coach
Carl Hughes and team manager Billy Bartlett had to don the jerseys due
to the unavailability of a number of the back line thus adding almost
100 years experience to Carns youthful side !!! with a disjointed
three-quarter line Cwmcarn were always going to be up against it and
this proved to be the case as the speedy Ironsides backs caused havoc.
Within twenty minutes Ironsides led 28-0 with four wonderfully worked
tries. In fairness the speed and precision of these movements were a joy
to watch and credit must be given to Ironsides for some delightful
rugby. Carn pulled one back just before the break after a scrum against
the head led to a bullocking run by veteran Carl Hughes who crashed over
for Shaun Gilchrist to convert. After the break there was more of the
same as Cwmcarn couldn't match the pace and inventiveness of the
Ironsides backs . Carns pack always gave their all and this kept the
flood gates closed, their good possession leading to some forays into
the Ironsides twenty two but eventually all the grunt and tackling took
their toll and Ironsides took a deserved 48-7 victory. Cwmcarn struggled
manfully against the odds and special mention should be given to hooker
Mark Reader who has worked hard on his fitness and full back Shaun
Gilchrist with some hard running and strong tackling as usual. Cwmcarn United v Aberbeeg 14th December 2007 Carl Hughes club reporter CWMCARN UNITED RFC V CWM !!!!!!! Cwmcarn hosted Cwm in a frenetic game at Waunfawr Park. Both
teams played attacking rugby from the first whistle to the last
in an entertaining game for both sets of supporters . As usual
Cwm played it hard and sometimes unfair upfront but with no
quarter asked or given Cwmcarns young pack stood up to the
physicality and gave as good as they got. the first half saw 5
yellow cards brandished by the young ref as both sides stood up
to be counted !! Cwm took the lead with a converted try after a
period of pressure only for Cwmcarn to score an unconverted try
when winger Rhys Williams scored his first try for the club
showing his pace to score in the corner. After the break Cwmcarn
went in front from a penalty from Jeremy Parsons on his return
to the club. Cwm then scored an unconverted try to regain the
lead. Some fabulous handling from Cwmcarn saw Jeremy Parsons
slipping a scoring pass out of the back door only for Rhys
Williams to knock it on with the line at his mercy. A frantic
last ten minutes saw Cwmcarn attacking time and again but Cwms
defense stood firm to take the spoils 12-8.after a fine hard
tackling and strong running debut the man of the match
performance went to Barry Garnham closely followed by a much
improved performance by Ieaun Parsons who controlled the game
well from ten. Carl Hughes Cwm v Cwmcarn United RFC 6th January 2008 Cwmcarn
were again let down by a number of first choice players when they traveled to
face Cwm. For the fourth match running Carn were left struggling to field a team
despite twenty six confirmations of availability !! nevertheless Cwmcarn fielded
a team and competed against an aggressive Cwm side. Throughout the first half
the contest was even and only a breakaway try allowed Cwm to stretch away to a
15-0 lead. Cwmcarn again played some tremendous attacking rugby picking and
driving through Cwms' defense only to drop the ball or knock on as the line
approached. Cwm also played attacking rugby and scored some well worked tries as
Cwmcarn weakened in the final quarter. Cwmcarn never let their heads down but
with only 14 players the floodgates opened and cwm ran out deserved 30-0
winners. Lee Goodall continued his improvement with some thumping tackles in
midfield and he shared the man of the match with Gareth Jianikos who gave a fine
committed display from eight on his debut. The injury to Jeremy Parsons was not
as bad as first thought with doctors at Neville Hall Hospital confirming a
slight strain to his elbow. Carl Hughes New Panteg v Cwmcarn United
19th January 2008 Cwmcarn United made the short journey to WRU side New Panteg and
despite the atrocious conditions both sides managed a thrilling game which
ebbed and flowed from first whistle to last. Panteg took the lead with two
tries the second of which was a beaut scored by their young full back who
had an impressive game throughout. The conversion of the first try was
charged down by Jeremy Parsons but the second went over. Cwmcarn replied
with a try by Gareth Jianikos after a well controlled driving maul. Panteg
then scored another fine converted try again scored by the full back.
Cwmcarn would not be daunted and defended like Trojans before breaking out
and scoring with a length of the field try which flowed from one touchline
to the other with backs and forwards handling as if it were a sunny spring
day. The scoring pass was taken by Jianikos for his second try. The second
half continued in the same vein with the large crowd entertained by some
superb rugby from both sides. Scrum half Kieran Gilchrist scored after
another driving maul but crucially all three conversions were missed leaving
Panteg the 19-15 victors on a day where attacking rugby from forwards and
backs was the winner ! Cwmcarn have recruited a number of new players this
season and all are performing well. Novices Rhys Williams, Lee Goodall, Luke
Carter, Kieran Gilchrist and James Hillier improve with every game and in
recent weeks these raw recruits have been assisted by the experience of
Gareth Jianikos who has been influential. The star performer Saturday for a
committed driving game from both prop then blindside was deservedly awarded
to Neal "Molby " Hopkins. Carl Hughes sports reporter The Guardian Aberbeeg v Cwmcarn United 26th January 2008
Cwmcarn traveled with another
depleted side to face a large Aberbeeg side. Cwmcarn started well and could have
scored twice in the opening ten minutes only for the ref to adjudge that the
ball had not been grounded. This proved crucial as Cwmcarn again pressed hard
only for the ball to be intercepted allowing Beeg to score a length of the field
try followed immediately by another straight from the kick off. Carn carried on
with their running game but the power of the Beeg 8 snuffed out attack after
attack with Sean Gilchrist and Jeremy Parsons always to the fore. After the
break Carn scored a fine try after good handling by backs and for wards allowed
impressive full back Miles Goodman to score in the corner. This was to be their
only score but Cwmcarn never gave in and attacked whenever they could steal the
ball off the impressive Beeg 8. Aberbeeg ran out 29-5 winners but Cwmcarn with
their team of midgets played some thrilling rugby throughout. Dean Rhodes played
his best game to date and was well supported by Sean and Kieran Gilchrist,
Matthew Plews and the star performer Jeremy Parsons. The coaches and management
are looking for anyone over 5 ft 8 and thirteen stone to bolster their pack but
despite their lack of stature the current crop cannot be faulted for their
effort and commitment and must be congratulated on their hard work against much
larger teams week after week.
Quote of the match " I must protest referee, it was not I who was stamping,
although I cannot deny there was un gentlemanly conduct taking place, it is not
in my nature to be such a blagard". Miles "winco" Goodman to Referee Steve
Hancock just after receiving a yellow card. By the way it was that blagard with
the angelic face Ieun Parsons who put a toe on the "CHIEF". Cwmbran v Cwmcarn United 1st February 2008 USK V CWMCARN UNITED RFC FRIDAY 22nd February 2008 Cwmcarn were entertained by Usk RFC on Friday night. The game was played at a
high tempo with the Cwmcarn forwards and backs combining to create a spectacle
of running rugby. Stand in outside half Matthew Hughes was magnificent in his
control of the game with inside half Matthew Plews the perfect link between
forwards and backs. Cwmcarn opened the scoring with a well worked length of the
field movement that culminated in a try for Plews. Usk struck back with a try
after the kick off, United replied with penalty to make the score 5-8. The
Cwmcarn Pack were now dominant and pushing Usk in all quarters with James
Hillier playing his best game yet for the Carn, another penalty was awarded
which allowed Cwmcarn to stretch their lead. Shortly before the break Cwmcarn
was awarded another penalty which they elected to kick for touch from the
lineout Usk were adjudged to have infringed Cwmcarn opted for a scrum on Usk's
five yard the resultant scrum saw No.8 Brett Jenkins pick up and drive to the
line only to be stopped short, from the ensuing ruck a short pass was given to
fullback Matthew Harper who crashed over in spectacular style to make the score
at half time 5-16. The second half started in the same vein as the first with Cwmcarn playing
their now practiced unorthodox style of play with attacking flair and solid
defense. The only score of the half went Usk's way with them crossing the line
in a well worked move from the base of scrum close to the Carn's line. The
Carn had to tough it out as Usk introduced more experienced players to the
battle, Cwmcarns defense was akin to that of Rorke's Drift as they fought of
attack after attack of Usks' Impi's, all that was missing was Ivor Emanuel
chirping in with Men of Harlech. The game ended with scores at 10-16. Cwmcarn
United would like to thank Usk RFC for their hospitality and very good nature in
which the game was played. Cwmcarn United v Newbridge United 1st March 2008 CWMCARN
UNITED V HOLLYBUSH 22nd March 2008 Cwmcarn ended their
league season in style with an emphatic victory over high flyers Hollybush.
Cwmcarn played expansive rugby from the first whistle and took the lead with
a wonderful length of the field try finished by the impressive Ieaun
Parsons. Another superb move saw Shaun Gilchrist feed Budgie Thomas to score
in the corner. Hollybush replied with a converted try but The Carn
scored a converted try with Kieran Gilchrist this time the scorer to lead
17-7 at the break. Hollybush started the second half well with their large
pack to the fore and scored a try only for Dai Jones to weave his magic to
score in the corner. Hollybush came back again and going into the last
quarter the game was well balanced with Cwmcarn just ahead 22-17. Cwmcarns'
superior fitness and three quarter skills were evident in these last minutes
and two more fine tries were scored by Matthew Hughes and Ieaun Parsons
whose twinkle toes dazzled all those lucky enough to be present !! the final
score being 36-17 to Cwmcarn. There were many fine displays but the star
performer was Shaun Gilchrist who is developing into a fine player. NOTE FROM THE COMMITTEE: SO FAR THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS
SEEN AT CWMCARN UNITED FOR MANY YEARS. DUE TO THE COMMITMENT OF THE PLAYERS
AND COACHING STAFF, THINGS LOOK GOOD FOR THE FUTURE AND IF ALL THE RULES OF
THE LEAGUE WERE TO BE INVOKED CWMCARNS' POSITION IN THE LEAGUE WOULD BE
MUCH BETTER, REMEMBER CWMCARN HAVE NOT CALLED OFF ANY MATCHES DUE TO LACK OF
PLAYERS AS MANY SIDES DO AND CWMCARN DO NOT RELY ON PLAYERS FROM OTHER TEAMS
TO BOLSTER THEIR PLAYING STRENGTH. THE BOYS OF THE CARN ARE THE BOYS OF THE
CARN. CWMCARN UNITED RFC V GIRLINGS RFC 4th April 2008 Cwmcarn
hosted Girlings in a friendly at the welfare ground and were lack lustre
from the start. Girlings traveled without a hooker so with uncontested
scrums there was little interest from Carns pack. Carn should have opened
the scoring though with a fine threequarter movement saw stalwart centre Dai
"oakdale" Jones almost scoring. Girlings responded well with their young
athletic team being guided by their impressive ten scoring three quick tries
to lead at the break 17-0. There was more of the same in the second half as
Girlings increased their lead with three more tries before Cwmcarn finally
scored with an excellent try by Mike "Budgie" Thomas. Carn made numerous
changes but nothing could wake them from their slumber as they went down
43-5. through the general malaise there were some good individual
performances by Matthew Plews and Richie Partridge but the man of the match
was awarded to Karl Baraby with a strong performance in the powerhouse. This
was only his second appearance in the second row and is recognition of a
quietly improving all round game. St JOSEPHS (NEWPORT) V CWMCARN UNITED Cwmcarn traveled to St. Josephs and started like Linford Christie
only to fade like Arsenal in the title race. Excellent work from
forwards and backs saw Cwmcarn score a fine try by Shaun Gilchrist. Four
more tries went begging with the final pass going forward or to the
ground. Finally a second try was scored by the excellent Keiron
Gilchrist who was impressive throughout. Cwmcarn took the foot off the
gas and the younger St Joe's took full advantage scoring fine tries of
their own to lead 19-10 at the break. Cwmcarn fought back well despite
suffering some nasty injuries especially to outside half Geraint Leach
and were rewarded when veteran no 8 Carl Hughes crashed over for a try
to bring Carn within 2 points. St Joe's then stepped on the gas to score
some great tries with a superb performance from their flying wing who
completed a fine hat trick ( and possibly more !!!!!). St Joe's ran out
worthy winners with Cwmcarns ageing side eventually run ragged . despite
this keiron Gilchrest produced an outstanding display of threequarter
skill both in attack and defense and deservedly took the man of the
match award. Kieran has been a fine addition to the side and with a bit
more fitness will be a force to be reckoned with . Carl Cefn Fforrest v Cwmcarn United 18/04/08 Cwmcarn continued their fine tradition of fielding a team come
what may when they traveled to Cefn Fforest for their penultimate
game of the season. Cwmcarn had to elect passive scrums as they were
unable to field a front row and this played into the hands of a
speedy Fforest side as the quick boys did not have to expend any
energy at scrum time. Fforest played with a hurricane at their backs
and quickly got into their stride scoring some fine tries . Cwmcarn
showed plenty of spunk and guts but with a depleted side were
outclassed in all aspects of the game. Kieran Gilchrist suffered an
injury and had to be replaced early in the game with Mark Reader
filling in at 9. The second half was much the same though Carn never
gave up and finally old stalwart Antony Day got over the line S.
Gilchrist converted. This was the only score for Carn as Fforest
completely dominated to run out winners. Credit must be given to
stout performances in defeat from both Gilchrist boys, Tom llewelyn
and special mention to youngster Dan Evans who once again showed
courage to complete 30 min's against the big boys !!!
If I haven't mentioned you please accept my apologies it's due my
advancing years. CWMCARN UNITED RFC V BLAINA UNITED RFC 27th April 2008
Waunfawr Park was the
venue of Cwmcarns final game of the season against Blaina United and
what a spectacle of running open rugby it was with both sides enjoying
the warm dry weather. Cwmcarn were quickly into the game with a try by
Jeremy Parsons in his first game back after a working holiday in the
Devon town of Whitehead, the conversion was slotted by the continually
improving Shaun Gilchrist who was playing despite a severe infection.
Cwmcarns' brand of open rugby could have resulted in any number of tries
in the first quarter with full back Miles Goodman scrum half Matthew
Plews and openside Jammy Jones to the fore but Blainas stoic defense
held out. A breakthrough came for Blaina from a Cwmcarn defensive
mistake which saw them levelling the score with a penalty try. From the
restart Cwmcarn again bravely entered the fray with their shock and awe
tactics which saw Jez scoring a second try to put Cwmcarn back in the
lead, a converted Penalty soon followed which saw Cwmcarn go into the
interval 15-7.
