CWMCARN UNITED V BLAINA UNITED 13/09/08

After Noah moved his ark from the previous 40 day deluge, Cwmcarn finally got their season underway entertaining Blaina United in a league fixture.  As usual the bullying Blaina pack shoved with all their might in the scrums using this power to grind their way up field.  Cwmcarn defended stoutley and more than held their own at ruck and maul.  Blaina took the lead with a nice break from ten freeing the outside backs to score.  Carn replied with a penalty but Blaina broke away to score a second try.  The half ended with Cwmcarn camped on Blaina's try line only to be denied by the ref failing to see a touch down and awarding a scrum instead.  Carn started the second half well with Keiron Gilchrist barging over from close range after a powerful forward drive.  Blaina replied with a score of their own followed by 2 penalties.  A flurry of yellow cards saw Carn down to 13 and Blaina took full advantage scoring another try.  Carn stayed in the game til the very end and credit must be given to both sides who played entertaining rugby throughout.  Blaina turning out the winners 30 points to 8.

Coaches notes....

Despite being a few backs short Craig Brown and Mark Reader filled in well in the centre and Shaun Gilchrist adapted well to life at 10.  Simon Hopkins & Martin reader showed what fine additions to the squad they will be and Karl Baraby showed  his commitment and effort in training has paid off.  More signings are required to bolster the back line and with more fitness and practice we can develop further......a good effort boys but more pain is required to progress!

CWMCARN UNITED V TONGWYNLAIS 27/09/08

The Carn entertained Tongwynlais in a fast and open friendly with the visitors capitalising on two early Carn mistakes to race into a 12-0 lead .With a depleted back line Carns pack decided to take the game by the scruff and they showed power and enterprise in the loose with Neil"molby" Hopkins and Simon "the power" Hopkins really taking the game to the opposition  with some storming runs and strong defence around the fringes. The pack drove aggresively to the line where powerful scrum half Keiran Gilchrist barged over for a converted try . This was quickly followed by a free flowing move featuring forwards and backs with Miles "winko" Goodman touching down in the corner. After a flurry of yellow cards saw Carn reduced to 13 , Tongwynlais took full advantage and crossed to lead 19-15. after the break Carns half backs keiron and Shaun Gilchrist controlled the game as the pack dogged on and on. Openside and lineout threat Karl  Baraby played his best game for the club and strong running from Martyn Reader and Mike "black belt " Featherstone saw Carn go close time and again before another handling error behind saw Tongwynlais go further ahead with a converted try. A rousing finale saw Shaun Gilchrist go over from a planned move from a scrum but this proved in vain as the final whistle saw Carn go down 26-22.

ABERBEEG V CWMCARN UNITED

Cwmcarn travelled to face Aberbeeg in a league fixture with a much weakened pack. With only a makeshift front row it would have been easy to opt for uncontested scrums but THE CARN strive to maintain the spirit of rugby and despite facing the bigger beeger pack Carn saw out the game . Beeger played some superb all round rugby in poor conditions to lead 25-0 at the break. Carn had some good scoring opportunities but failed to convert any, notably when six stone winger Leighton Walkley was held up over the line. The second half was much closer with Carn making the most of what little ball they had to play some running rugby of their own. Returning centre Matthew Hughes crossed but Beeger were too strong and turned out comfortable 39-5 winners. Paul buckley played well at loosehead with some impressive work around the field and despite lack of preparation Sam Brewster was outstanding along with Simon Hopkins,Martyn Reader and Drew Hobbs who worked tirelessly on the backfoot throughout. CWMCARN UNITED RFC WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR OLD FRIENDS ABERBEEG RFC FOR A GAME THAT WAS PLAYED THROUGHOUT IN THE SPIRIT THAT IS RUGBY UNION.

Cwmcarn United RFC V Old Tylerrian RFC

Cwmcarn scored their first league points of the season with a 34-3 win over Old Tylerians. Cwmcarn raced into a 12 point lead with fine tries by Mike Featherstone and novice winger Leighton Walkely. This stung OTt's into action and the rest of the first half was keenly contested especially up front where once again Sam Brewster and Neil "Molby" Hopkins were outstanding. OT's failed to cross and only had a penalty kick to show for their efforts. After the break Carn were again out of the blocks quickly and impressive scrum half Keiran Gilchrist went over for namesake Shaun to convert. The next five minutes became the "Jammy" Jones show as he ran in for a brace of long distance scores to effectively end the game. Carn then threw the ball around from all parts of the pitch with Miles Goodman once again showing what a fine runner he is. The pack were all on top form but the man of the match performance was provided by Sam "The Surf" Brewster who never stopped running and tackled anything that moved throughout INCLUDING A NUMBER OF HIS OWN.

Cwmcarn United RFC V Old Tylerrian RFC Cyrus Davies Cup 18th October 2008

On Cyrus Davies Cup weekend Cwmcarn were drawn against last weeks league opponents OT's who provided a much sterner test on the smaller Waunfawr Park which suited their forward oriented style. There was little to shout about in a dour first half with only two Shaun Gilchrist penalties to one from OT's. After the break Carns pack started to dominate with captain Richie Partridge leading from the front with some barnstorming runs. At last the speedier Carn backline was being release and only some desperate defending kept them out. Wave after wave of forward drives and quick release ball saw Shaun Gilchrist crash over for the first try which he failed to convert. Carn made numerous changes to allow all players game time and all gave strong performances to give the coach some selection headaches ahead of next weeks WDRU Cup fixture against Cwm RFC . The highlight of the game came when young scrum half Dan Evans outstripped five opponents to score a magnificent try in the corner. Shaun Gilchrist capped a fine display with the touchline conversion to leave Carn worthy 18-3 victors. Man of the match  was awarded to Richie Partridge.

coaches notes... well done to the whole squad in a hard fought game...congratulations to new dads Martin, Richie, Mark and Paul ....look forward to those sleepless nights !!!!! There must be something in Normans beer!!!

Cwmcarn United RFC V Cwm RFC WORTHINGTON CUP

Cwmcarn hosted Cwm in the Welsh Districts Cup and what an entertaining game it was. Both sides competed fiercely at the break down with no quarter asked or given. Carns threequarters had the edge but Cwm kept them out with some hard tackling. The first half ebbed and flowed wonderfully with Carn leading 9-6 at the break, Shaun Gilchrist continuing in fine form with three well struck penalties. After the break Cwm equalised and for the next thirty minutes Carn defended stoutly repelling wave after wave of Cwm drives. Eventually the pressure told and Carn conceded a penalty which was duly taken. Cwm then went further ahead  with a well taken drop goal and held on to win 15-9. Credit must be given to the 17yr old referee Daniel Jones who had a marvelous game ensuring the ball be kept alive and thus  the game flowed freely. There were notable performances from Karl Baraby who continues to impress and James Hillier in the front row. The man of the match went to Martyn Reader for a Richie Mccaw performance on the deck.

Coaches notes...best display yet boys !!!! apologies for my substitutions I feel I made an error taking both jumpers and hooker off leaving us no lineout options and this I think cost us the game in the end...we will continue to work on this important area and with practice our lineout will function all game not just for an hour ...Carl

Cwmcarn United RFC V Sully RFC

Cwmcarn entertained Sully in a friendly at the Welfare ground.  Carn fielded an experimental team with all squad members included to give them much needed game time.  Those who had been disappointed after missing out for the last 3 league and cup weekends all gave the coach some selection headaches after a thoroughly disciplined performance.  Carn were dominant in the scrum from the start and with some impressive work in the loose scrum half Keiron Gilchrist crossed for the first try.  Sully threw the ball around whenever they could get possession but could not break Carn's defence.  A quick penalty on his own 10 metre line saw number 8 Mike Featherstone beat a posse of potential tacklers whilst running fully 60 metre to score a superb try under the post.  From the restart Carn spun the ball out wide and after a flowing move from side to side Sean Gilchrist crossed in the corner.  The half ended with Carn in front 19-0.  The second half saw Carn's vertically challenged pack pouncing on the loose ball created panic in the Sully defence.  The resulting penalty was converted by Sean Gilchrist.  A flurry of substitutions took the steam out of Cwmcarn and allowed Sully back into the match.  They scored 2 nice try's but Carn scored a fine 22-10 victory.

Coaches notes:

A fine display from Mike Featherstone (if only he could stop kicking the ball !!!!!!)  and special mention to our 6' 3" 18 stone winger Leighton Walkely for some strong running and a try saving tackle.  Well done again boys and your nose don't look too bad Reader.....

Cwmcarn United RFC v Hafodyrdrynys RFC

13th Dec 2008

Cwmcarn entertained Hafodyrynys in a friendly at the Welfare ground. The first half was a stop start affair with the referee intent on blowing the pea from his whistle !!! Hafod had the lions share of possession and scored two tries but Shaun Gilchrist kept Carn in touch striking the ball well to land two penalties to make the half time score 12-6 to Hafod. The game up opened after the break with Matthew Hughes prominent in the centre before breaking through two tackles to set up an excellent length of the field converted try to take the lead. Some more fine play saw Jack Davies score under the posts for another converted try. Back came Hafod with a vengeance and some good handling saw them go over in the corner and a fine conversion saw the gap close to 1 point in Carns favour. From the restart  Carn gained field position and third penalty by Gilchrist was just about enough for Carn to hang on despite intense pressure on their line for the last five minutes the final score being 23-19.

Cwm v Cwmcarn United RFC

20th Dec 2008

Cwmcarn travelled to Cwm for a league fixture and despite some sore heads from the festivities the previous evening put up an encouraging performance against a strong Cwm 15. the pack were outstanding in the loose especially Matthew Harper, Stuart Mayne and Neil "Molby" Hopkins. Although giving weight  and ground at the set piece Molby was seen to good effect with ball in hand and at the break down where as usual Carns team of vertically challenged forwards made their presence felt on the ground gaining some fine turnovers and releasing quick ball. However with a depleted back line and impressive no 10 Shaun Gilchrist tearing a cartilage in the first movement of the match  Carn could not make best use of this ball whilst Cwms speedy threequarters did .going into the final 10 mins the game was still in the balance but eventually Cwm took advantage of Carns disorganised back line to triumph 30-0. This score flattering the winners as it was not a true reflection on the game.
